Review into Northern Harvest mass die-off to be completed by next February

Committee of independent external experts will be formed by the Marine Institute to review Mowi-owned salmon farmer.

In a release, reported by NTV, the Marine Institute has agreed to conduct a review into the events that led up to the deaths of 2.6 million salmon in Newfoundland, Canada.

Fishieres Minister Gerry Bryne said that it would bring in outside expertise to “make this a very robust exercise to ensure there is good confidence in the end product that they produce”.

The Marine Institute Memorial Institute wrote in a release that “The key objectives of the review will be to identify the cause of the mass mortality and assess the cleanup effort in response to the mortality event”.

Department of Fisheries and Land Resources at the time said: “The review will be conducted by Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Marine Institute, which is autonomous and operates at arm’s-length from government, a status enshrined and guaranteed under the Memorial University Act.”

Its review is expected to be completed in February 2020. All of the affected Northern Harvest’ licences are still suspended.
