Alternative feed ingredients for salmon farmers, advances in semi-closed and closed containment, RAS, and optimal energy consumption in land-based aquaculture all to be discussed.

Scotland’s Rural Affairs Minister, Mairi Gougeon, will lead a lineup of speakers at Aquaculture UK in Aviemore in two months time. The keynote theatre program, revealed alongside the two-day exhibition from May 14-15, will be free to attend.

The Minister will update delegates on progress in regulatory reform following Professor Russel Griggs’s independent review of aquaculture consenting, published two years ago. Additionally, she will outline ongoing work to support innovation in the sector as part of the Scottish Government’s ambitions for the industry, as highlighted in the Vision for Sustainable Aquaculture to 2045.

Gougeon will also address a WiSA (Women in Scottish Aquaculture) networking session, focusing on professional training and improving communication skills.

Other keynote speakers include Kevin Quillen of Glasgow-based space tech firm Krucial and risk management consultant Jason Scott, who will explore digitization’s role in mitigating the risks of fish farming. US data experts Scoot Science will lead a panel discussion on new environmental challenges and technology’s role in improving fish survival.

The Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) will mark its tenth anniversary with presentations from project partners covering a decade of impactful R&D. Updates on SAIC’s new funding arrangements to drive research will also be provided.

Representatives from Chile and Canada will examine technology trends in aquaculture, while the Centre for Aquaculture Technologies (CAT) will delve into the possibilities of gene editing for improved productivity and sustainability.

Alternative feed ingredients for salmon farmers, advances in semi-closed and closed containment, RAS, and optimal energy consumption in land-based aquaculture will also be discussed.

Cheri Arvonio, Event Director at Diversified Communications, expressed excitement about the keynote program, expecting full attendance due to the diverse range of aquaculture experts attending.

Aquaculture UK will take place at the Macdonald Resort in Aviemore, Scotland, from May 14-15, 2024. Opening times are Tuesday, May 14, 9.30am-6pm (including a social event), and Wednesday, May 15, 9.30am – 4pm.
