Campbeltown pupils introduced to careers across Scotland’s salmon sector.
Around 210 pupils from S1 to S3 at Campbeltown Grammar School took part in a careers event highlighting opportunities across Scotland’s salmon sector.
The event, held on February 5, was organised with Developing the Young Workforce Argyll and Bute and industry body Salmon Scotland. Employers and organisations from across the west coast participated, including Mowi Scotland, AKVA Group, BioMar, Scottish Sea Farms, Hendrix Genetics, the Scottish Association for Marine Science and Seaweed Scotland.
Pupils took part in hands-on sessions linking school subjects such as biology, environmental science and digital technology to roles in aquaculture, marine research and food production. Activities included demonstrations of farm technology, fish health and nutrition, and discussions around environmental protection and biodiversity.
Salmon Scotland said the event forms part of its wider schools programme aimed at improving awareness of career pathways in coastal communities. The organisation said around 11,000 jobs across Scotland depend on the salmon sector, including about 1,100 in Argyll and Bute.
Tavish Scott said the sector plays an important role in supporting jobs and communities across Kintyre and the west coast, and that early engagement with schools helps pupils understand the breadth of roles available close to home.
