Scottish salmon is the UK’s biggest and most valuable food export, with international sales of around £600 million to more than 50 countries annually.
MPs recently attended a Westminster event to learn about the economic and environmental contributions of Scotland’s salmon sector. The breakfast briefing, hosted by Western Isles MP Torcuil Crichton, attracted both new and long-serving MPs.
Scottish salmon, the UK’s largest food export, saw a 41% rise in international sales during the first half of 2024, particularly in Asia and America, generating £431 million in value. The sector supports around 12,500 jobs, including supply chain roles across Scotland, and is recognized for its low carbon footprint.
Torcuil Crichton stated, “Scottish salmon is set for growth in the next decade, driven by global demand for low carbon, nutritious food, but it’s essential that communities benefit from this expansion.”
Tavish Scott, CEO of Salmon Scotland, noted the importance of engaging MPs, saying, “It was a valuable opportunity to highlight the sector’s impact on all 57 Scottish constituencies.” Representatives from salmon producers were also present to discuss the industry’s supply chain.
