Scottish salmon sector eyes India following tariff-cutting trade deal.
Scottish salmon producers are assessing export opportunities in India following agreement on a free trade deal that will reduce tariffs on seafood exports from 30 percent to zero, according to industry body Salmon Scotland.
Chief executive Tavish Scott said the Prime Minister’s trade mission to India highlights “the exciting opportunities opening up” for the sector as it seeks to expand into new Asian markets.
“With tariffs set to fall from 30 per cent to zero, Scottish salmon can reach a whole new market while boosting growth at home,” Scott said. “We’re working closely with the UK Government and Indian partners to make sure our premium salmon reaches more tables across India – supporting coastal communities and showcasing the UK’s top food export.”
India is the world’s third-largest fish market, with domestic consumption reaching nearly 12 million tonnes in 2021, up 120 percent since 2005. Imports remain limited, but demand for high-end seafood is increasing in cities such as Delhi and Mumbai.
Scottish salmon, which reached record export sales of £844 million in 2024, is the UK’s largest food export. Sales to Asia rose 60 percent last year, driven by growth in China and Taiwan.
Salmon Scotland said it has shared information on the potential for growth in India with Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander, who joined the Prime Minister’s delegation on the trade visit.
