Mowi exports first salmon volumes to China via Glasgow Prestwick Airport.

Scottish salmon has begun shipping to China via a new seafood export operation at Glasgow Prestwick Airport, with 144 metric tonnes transported to Chengdu since the start of 2026.

The shipments mark the first commercial volumes handled under Prestwick Airport’s recently launched seafood export service, which is aimed at providing a dedicated air-freight gateway for perishable Scottish products.

Mowi said it is using the Prestwick operation as an additional export route to China, citing proximity to production sites in western Scotland and the potential for faster transit times compared with alternative UK airports.

China is a key growth market for Scottish salmon, particularly for fresh whole fish and premium portions, where air freight is required to meet freshness and shelf-life requirements.

Prestwick Airport has been seeking to expand its cargo activity in recent years, positioning itself as a specialist hub for time-sensitive freight, including seafood and pharmaceuticals.
