Scottish Sea Farms has reached a significant milestone in its philanthropic efforts, with its Heart of the Community fund surpassing £2 million in donations to local causes since its establishment in 2011.

The milestone was achieved following the company’s latest “Step Challenge,” which saw 20 employees collectively secure £2,100 in donations for causes of their choice. This autumn’s event was the second such initiative this year, reflecting the fund’s ongoing commitment to supporting communities near the company’s farms and facilities.

“It was a special moment when we realised we had reached that magic figure,” said Heart of the Community Coordinator Jessica Taylor-McKaig. “Our aim, as with the community fund itself, was to support the people we live and work alongside in whatever way we can.”

A Legacy of Support

Established 13 years ago, Heart of the Community provides grants ranging from £5,000 to £10,000, alongside numerous smaller contributions, to organisations addressing local needs. From supporting youth sports in remote areas to funding mental health and dependency services, the fund aims to deliver help where it is needed most.

“We had been giving to local causes long before 2011,” Taylor-McKaig explained, “but introduced the fund as a way of bringing more structure and strategic focus.”

The programme relies on Regional Coordinators—employees familiar with the local landscape—who review applications and identify areas where funds will have the greatest impact. Farm managers also play a role, with each receiving an annual £500 allowance to direct towards causes of their choosing, amounting to more than £55,000 in grants to date.

“Our approach ensures that decisions are informed by local knowledge, making the support as impactful as possible,” Taylor-McKaig added.

In response to broader economic pressures, including the rising cost of living and reduced public funding, the Heart of the Community fund has evolved to meet changing needs. Updates to the programme, announced last December, have helped ensure its relevance and effectiveness in supporting critical services and activities.

With over £2 million now distributed, Scottish Sea Farms’ Heart of the Community fund continues to underscore the company’s commitment to the regions it calls home. Taylor-McKaig described the milestone as both a celebration of past achievements and a foundation for future giving: “This is just the beginning of what we hope to achieve.”
