Norwegian seafood export value reaches all time high in 2025.
Norwegian seafood exports reached a record value in 2025, supported by higher prices for wild-caught species and increased salmon volumes, according to figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council.
Norway exported a total of 2.8 million tonnes of seafood worth NOK 181.5 billion ($17.61 billion) last year, an increase of NOK 6.4 billion ($600 million), or 4 per cent, compared with 2024. The export volume corresponds to an average of 38 million seafood meals per day throughout the year.
“2025 was a demanding year for seafood, with lower quotas and catches at record prices for all our most important wild-caught species. The year was also characterised by strong volume growth for salmon. Despite a significantly lower salmon price, it was a record year for Norwegian seafood exports in terms of value,” said Christian Chramer.
Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy Marianne Sivertsen Næss said the value record was achieved against a backdrop of increased uncertainty in global trade, and highlighted the seafood sector’s international competitiveness.
Poland, the United States and China were the largest markets for Norwegian seafood in 2025. The US accounted for 9 per cent of total export value, the highest share since 1989. During the year, the US increased tariffs on Norwegian seafood in April and August, with duties now at 15 per cent or higher across all products.
“Last year, Norway sold seafood to more than 150 countries, so we are completely dependent on good market access and an efficient flow of goods. The USA’s new tariffs created a lot of noise and turmoil for Norwegian seafood exports,” Chramer said, adding that the market shifted from strong growth in the first half of the year to weaker performance later on, influenced by tariffs and a weaker dollar.
Export value to the US rose by 55 per cent in the first quarter and 20 per cent in the second quarter, before slowing to 6 per cent growth in the third quarter and declining by 1 per cent in the fourth quarter.
Europe remained the largest regional market for Norwegian seafood, although its share of total export value fell from 67 per cent to 63 per cent. Poland was the largest single market for the 12th consecutive year, reflecting its role as a processing hub and growing domestic consumption of Norwegian salmon.
