Holmøy Havbruk to empty site in Nordland following suspected ILA outbreak.
Norwegian salmon producer Holmøy Havbruk will empty its Trolløya SV site in Sortland municipality, Nordland, on 16 May following suspicion of infectious salmon anemia (ISA), the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) confirmed on Thursday.
The suspicion was reported by Holmøy Havbruk on 14 May. The Veterinary Institute is responsible for confirming the diagnosis. ISA is classified as a category C disease in Norway, requiring measures to prevent potential spread.
Movement restrictions have been imposed on the site, and Mattilsynet has urged all aquaculture-related activities in the area to exercise caution. If the suspicion is confirmed, Mattilsynet may order culling and complete depopulation of the site. In this case, Holmøy Havbruk has already planned to empty the site as a precaution.
ILA affects salmon by establishing itself on external surfaces such as mucous membranes, gills, and skin.
