Processor adjudged to meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability alongside a commitment to goals beyond shareholder value.
London-based fish curing and smoking specialist, the Secret Smokehouse has become the first smokehouse globally to earn B Corporation (B Corp) certification.
The certification, awarded by the non-profit B Lab, confirms that Secret Smokehouse meets rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Certification follows the company’s move to use land-based salmon last year, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable practices in the aquaculture industry.
Secret Smokehouse founder and owner Max Bergius expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “Becoming the first smokehouse in the world to join the B Corp community is hugely exciting. It is a testament to our dedication to doing business differently and sustainably. We hope this inspires others in the industry to prioritize their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.”
The B Corp certification evaluates a company’s impact across five areas: governance, workers, community, environment, and customers. To achieve certification, a company must score at least 80 points on the B Impact Assessment and meet stringent criteria for responsible business practices.
Chris Turner, executive director of B Lab UK, welcomed Secret Smokehouse to the B Corp community, noting, “Secret Smokehouse is paving the way for a new approach in the fish smoking and curing industry. This certification highlights their commitment to positive impact, and we are delighted to have them as part of our community.”
The certification positions Secret Smokehouse alongside over 8,000 B Corps worldwide, including prominent UK companies like The Guardian, Innocent Drinks, and Sipsmith Gin.
Founded in 2016, Secret Smokehouse has grown significantly, supplying handcrafted oak-smoked fish to Michelin-starred chefs, top restaurants, and hotels from its base in Hackney, London.
