Despite its growing international presence, polynucleotide injections are not available in the United States as they are not approved by the FDA.
In a recent episode of her Hulu series The Kardashians, Kim Kardashian revealed she tried a new non-surgical treatment.
“I got a salmon sperm facial with salmon sperm injected into my face,” Kardashian told a bemused Kris Jenner.
This treatment, known as polynucleotide injections, utilizes DNA derived from fish semen and has gained popularity in countries such as Australia, the UK, and Korea.
The beauty tip made national news across the US, featuring on USA Today, the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Vogue.
She’s not the only A-lister who’s given this a facial a try either. Jennifer Aniston shared with The Wall Street Journal last year she also got a salmon sperm facial, though she wasn’t sure it made a difference in her skin. “First of all, I said, ‘Are you serious? How do you get salmon’s sperm?’ ” Aniston said.
The injections go by names including Pluryal Silk, Nucleofill and Ameela, and some doctors are using them as a skin booster (delivering shallow injections to make skin glow) or mixed with hyaluronic acid to instantly plump and boost skin’s own regeneration over time.
Studies indicate that polynucleotides support tissue regeneration and stimulate collagen production, potentially improving skin tone, fine lines, elasticity, and hydration.
Despite its growing international presence, polynucleotide injections are not available in the United States as they are not approved by the FDA. However, Kardashian’s endorsement may increase interest in the treatment.
