Thailand overtakes Japan and South Korea in Norwegian salmon consumption.

Thailand has become the second-largest consumer of Norwegian salmon and fjord trout in Asia, surpassing both Japan and South Korea, according to figures released by the Norwegian Seafood Council.

In the first seven months of 2025, Thailand imported 14,511 tonnes of Norwegian salmon and 5,285 tonnes of fjord trout. This represents a 50 percent year-on-year increase in volume and a 15 percent increase in value. Only China imports more Norwegian salmon in the region.

Japan imported 14,810 tonnes of salmon and 1,935 tonnes of trout during the same period, while South Korea received 18,086 tonnes of salmon and just 22 tonnes of trout.

The growth in Thailand has been attributed to lower prices earlier in the year, rising demand for healthy protein, and strong consumer preference for Norwegian salmon and fjord trout.

The Norwegian Seafood Council has launched a large-scale marketing campaign in Thailand, running from August 1 to September 30, across more than 1,000 retail outlets. Participating partners include Makro, Tops, Big C, Lotus’s, Foodland, Villa Market, Thammachart Seafood, GO Wholesale, and restaurant chains Salad Factory and Somtam Nua.
