Reports of escaped farmed salmon caught in Sørfold.

The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries has received reports that approximately 10 farmed salmon have been caught by recreational fishers near Straumen in Sørfold municipality, Nordland, over the past few days.

At present, the directorate states it cannot link the captures to any known escape event. Contact has been made with aquaculture companies operating in the area. The fish caught are reported to weigh around 6 kilograms.

From Chile to Norway: Which countries are cracking down on salmon escapes?

The Directorate is encouraging members of the public to report any further catches or sightings of farmed salmon in the region, ideally with accompanying photographs. It is also requesting that fishers take scale samples from any suspected farmed fish caught, to assist in assessing the scope and spread of any potential escape.

Local fishing regulations must continue to be observed.
