Bluefin tuna found in netpen at Eide Fjordbruk site.
Eide Fjordbruk has reported damage to a net at its Lyngholmane site in Vestland, Norway.
According to the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries, a hole of about one metre was discovered in the enclosure after staff found a dead Atlantic bluefin tuna at the bottom of the net. The site contains salmon averaging 4.2 kilograms. The extent of any escape is not yet known.
The Directorate said it is following up the case under standard procedures. Escapes from aquaculture facilities are treated as serious incidents due to potential genetic interaction with wild stocks.
The Lyngholmane site is located in Lågøyfjorden near Sula, operated by Eide Fjordbruk, one of Norway’s family-owned salmon farming companies.
