Mowi‘s Chilean subsidiary is facing enforcement action after the country’s environmental regulator accused it of expanding a freshwater hatchery without the required environmental approval.

The Superintendence of the Environment (SMA) has charged Mowi Chile with allegedly increasing production and modifying infrastructure at its Domeyko hatchery on Lake Llanquihue without first obtaining environmental approval through Chile’s Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA), according to reporting by Mundo Acuícola.

According to the report, production at the hatchery increased from a historical level of about 51.6 tonnes a year to 347 tonnes in 2024. The investigation followed a complaint by National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) in late 2024 and inspections were carried out during 2025.

Mowi Chile said it is reviewing the regulator’s findings and noted that the hatchery has operated since the 1980s, before the SEIA permitting system came into force. The company added that the charges mark an initial stage of the administrative process and that it will cooperate with the authorities.
