Around 50,000 fish died at Helgeland Smolt’s land-based facility in Kilvik, Norway, following an animal welfare incident on April 21, according to a report submitted to the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

The company attributed the event to a “technical failure,” but uncertainty over the exact cause remains while analysis continues.

The fish that died weighed more than 100 grams each and were destined for grow-out sites this summer.
