Icelandic land-based salmon farmer Laxey has brought its new post-smolt facility in Vestmannaeyjar into operation following the transfer of more than 1.1 million fish from its sixth production batch.

According to a company update on LinkedIn, fish transfers began on 27 May and were completed on 5 June, allowing the facility to enter service.

The post-smolt unit comprises eight tanks of 1,050 cubic metres each, providing a total production volume of 8,400 cubic metres. Laxey said the facility will allow larger fish to be reared earlier in the production cycle, improving utilisation of grow-out capacity and increasing operational flexibility.

The facility was completed in 10 months.

Laxey produces four batches of fish annually at its smolt facility, with each batch expected to spend around 90 days in the new post-smolt unit before transfer to grow-out tanks.

The commissioning follows the company’s first commercial harvest earlier this year, when Laxey reported a superior share of 98.6% and an average harvest weight of approximately 4.2kg.
