Mowi has reported that around 14,500 farmed salmon are missing following an escape incident at its Brattholmen site in Herøy municipality, Nordland.

The incident was first reported on 7 May after damage was discovered to a net pen at the site.

Following the escape, the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries ordered the company to conduct a stock count to determine the scale of the incident. Mowi has since reported a shortfall of approximately 14,500 salmon, while noting that there is uncertainty surrounding the figure.

The fish in the affected pen had an average weight of just over 4 kg.

Mowi deployed recapture nets around the site after the incident and has recovered three escaped salmon, according to the Directorate.

The regulator has also ordered the company to carry out environmental monitoring and remove escaped farmed salmon from 10 rivers in the area, stretching from Halsfjorden at the outer Vefsnfjord to Ranfjord. Two of the rivers are designated national salmon rivers.

The Directorate said it will continue to follow up the incident through its normal inspection procedures.
