Mowi Feed has applied to increase annual production capacity at its Valsneset feed mill in Ørland, Norway, from 450,000 tonnes to 550,000 tonnes.
The application, submitted to the County Governor of Trøndelag under Norway’s Pollution Control Act, follows the start of construction work to expand the plant from two to 2.5 production lines.
According to the application, the expansion is intended to meet growing demand for fish feed and would increase the facility’s production capacity by 100,000 tonnes per year. The site has been in operation since 2014 and currently employs 89 people.
Environmental consultant Rambøll, which prepared the application, said wastewater volumes and emissions are expected to remain broadly in line with recent years despite the higher production level, as they depend primarily on cleaning operations rather than production volumes.
The application also proposes revising the plant’s discharge permit, including increasing the annual limit for biological oxygen demand (BOD5) from 40 to 50 tonnes while reducing the annual limit for suspended solids from 200 to 65 tonnes.
