Mowi: to brand feedpipes in marine debris initiative

Mowi Scotland is introducing branded feedpipes across its farming operations in a bid to improve the identification and recovery of aquaculture equipment found on Scotland's coastline.

The company said it will become the first salmon producer in Scotland to mark its feedpipes with its logo, allowing marine debris to be more easily traced to its source.

The initiative follows a proposal from Ullapool Sea Savers, a youth environmental group based in the Highlands.

Under the current reporting system, members of the public who discover suspected aquaculture debris can report its location to Salmon Scotland using What3Words. The nearest salmon farm is then responsible for recovering the material, regardless of where it originated.

Mowi said branding its feedpipes would allow equipment lost during severe weather to be identified more quickly, while also helping distinguish debris originating from other industries or overseas.

"When Ullapool Sea Savers approached us with the idea of branding our feedpipes, it was a no-brainer," said Ben Hadfield, chief operating officer for farming at Mowi Scotland.

"Having a clear way to identify marine waste means straight away we know where it came from and can ensure it is cleared quickly."

The company said all existing feedpipes are now being marked using an in-house designed branding device, with future feedpipe purchases also set to carry the Mowi logo.

Mowi Scotland said its staff carried out 57 beach cleans during 2025 and will continue to remove marine debris found near its farming sites while providing data to the Marine Conservation Society.
