Pure Salmon Japan has begun production at its land-based salmon facility in Tsu, Mie Prefecture, after stocking approximately 250,000 Atlantic salmon eggs imported from certified broodstock.
The company said the eggs arrived through Kansai International Airport before clearing veterinary inspections, customs and regulatory procedures ahead of transfer to the hatchery site.
Construction of the broader recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility is continuing in parallel.
Pure Salmon Japan said the site is designed to produce 10,000 tonnes of Atlantic salmon annually, positioning it as the largest land-based salmon farming facility in Japan once completed.
The company is targeting first harvests in 2028.
The project has secured approximately $182 million in preferred equity financing alongside around JPY 29 billion ($190 million) in senior debt, according to the company.
Pure Salmon Japan said the facility is being developed using Norwegian aquaculture technology and will supply markets around Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka.
The company added that residual production materials are expected to be processed into pet food products.
The project is backed by 8F Asset Management, which has previously described the Mie facility as the flagship site within the wider Pure Salmon platform.
