Norwegian grocery chain Rema 1000 has halted sales of salmon products fed with Russian-origin feed ingredients, following recent media reports on sourcing practices in the aquaculture supply chain.

The decision comes after coverage by Nettavisen and E24 highlighting the use of Russian raw materials in fish feed. While Norway has introduced multiple sanctions packages against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine, feed ingredients are not covered and remain legal to import.

Imports of fish feed and feed raw materials from Russia to Norway increased by more than 70% in 2025, according to data from Statistics Norway.

Mowi is among producers that have sourced inputs such as soy protein concentrate and rapeseed oil from Russia. These have been used in salmon products sold through major retailers, including private-label lines.

Rema 1000 said the affected products have now been removed from its shelves.

“These products are no longer in our stores. We will not sell products that do not meet our requirements, and we have received assurances that new batches will not be affected by feed containing Russian raw materials,” said purchasing director Line Aarnes, according to Nettavisen.

Other retailers, including Norgesgruppen, have taken similar steps in recent days.

Mowi said it is operating in line with applicable regulations.
