SalMar ASA and aquaculture technology company Tidal have announced a strategic collaboration to scale automation and AI-driven operations across SalMar’s farming sites.

Tidal, a spin-out of X, Google’s Moonshot Factory, will deploy its all-in-one camera systems and environmental sensors at multiple SalMar locations. Data will stream into Tidal’s platform for real-time monitoring of fish welfare, early lice detection, risk forecasting, and treatment effectiveness.

Tidal’s autonomous feeding systems will roll out across several SalMar sites, targeting feed conversion ratio improvement, growth consistency, and reduced feed waste. The companies also plan to test Tidal’s autonomous in-pen lice mitigation system.

“Working with SalMar allows us to deliver our AI-powered robotics and control platform into real-world industrial operations at scale,” said Rajesh Jadhav, chief executive of Tidal.

The collaboration extends to individual fish identification and growth tracking, using large language models developed with Google to support breeding programmes.

SalMar chairman Gustav Witzøe said the partnership would strengthen the company’s ability to deliver smarter, more sustainable operations. “Automated feeding and a new lice treatment technique, together with more accurate data from our farming sites, has the potential to shape the next generation of salmon farming,” Witzøe said.

Astro Teller, captain of moonshots at X, said the SalMar tie-up reflects Tidal’s readiness for commercial scale after years of deep-tech development.

No financial terms were disclosed. The immediate focus is deployment and validation across SalMar sites, with lice mitigation technology still in testing phase. Performance data from early sites will determine the pace of broader rollout.
