Smögenlax Aquaculture AB and Samonix Inc. have signed a strategic letter of intent aimed at advancing land-based recirculating aquaculture system, RAS, projects in North America.

The agreement formalises closer cooperation between the two companies in the development of modular, circular RAS facilities. Smögenlax has recently introduced proprietary and patent-pending design elements in its RAS technology, while Samonix is positioned as a long-term development partner in the Americas.

Samonix is evaluating an initial project phase targeting approximately 10,000 tonnes of annual production capacity, with potential for phased expansion over time. The company said it has progressed environmental and regulatory processes and completed core technical and supporting studies required at this stage. Formal reviews are under way with relevant authorities, in parallel with ongoing technical and commercial discussions between the parties.

“This milestone represents an important step in deepening our collaboration,” said Mathieu Farley, president of Samonix. “Smögenlax has demonstrated impressive technological advancements in modular and circular RAS solutions. By strengthening our strategic alignment, we are positioning ourselves to deploy world-class innovation at scale in North America within an industry undergoing structural transformation and requiring next-generation technological solutions.”

Joel Oresten, chief executive of Smögenlax, said the agreement recognises the company’s modular design approach, based on units of 2,000 tonnes per year. “Samonix offers strong local leadership, project development capability, and long-term operational vision,” he said. “Together, we aim to combine Swedish aquaculture innovation with North American execution strength.”

The companies said they will now advance technical due diligence, refine commercial frameworks and assess the pathway towards definitive agreements.

The announcement was made in Kungshamn on 2 March 2026.
