Thor Salmon has completed the first delivery of smolt from its facility in Þorlákshöfn, Iceland, marking the start of commercial operations at the site.
More than 330,000 smolt with an average weight of around 100 grams were transported by truck earlier this week to buyer Kaldvík, according to a company update published Tuesday.
Thor Salmon said the smolt facility is now fully operational and that fish condition remains strong. The company expects to deliver more than one million additional smolt to customers in the near term, while part of the production will be transferred into its own grow-out operations later this year.
“We consider it a significant milestone to deliver the first smolt from our facility in Þorlákshöfn, demonstrating that all our plans for development and growth are progressing as expected,” CEO Steinþór Pálsson said in the release.
Construction of the first phase of Thor Salmon’s grow-out operation is currently underway. The phase is designed for annual production capacity of 5,000 tonnes and includes 14 grow-out tanks with a combined volume of approximately 52,000 cubic metres.
The first tanks are expected to become operational this autumn.
Thor Salmon said future expansion will be phased and financed sequentially, with long-term production expected to exceed 40,000 tonnes annually.
