Måsøval has received approval to expand biomass capacity and sea area at its Slettevika salmon farming site near Nordre Vartdal in Ørsta municipality, western Norway.

According to local newspaper Møre-Nytt, the site’s maximum allowed biomass (MTB) has been increased from 3,120 tonnes to 4,680 tonnes, a 50% increase.

The approval also includes an expansion of the marine production area and the attachment of two additional farming licences to the site.

Slettevika is located in Norway’s production area 5, which currently holds yellow status under the country’s “traffic light” system for salmon farming regulation. Under the regime, production areas are assessed primarily on environmental impact from sea lice, with yellow status permitting only limited growth.

The decision comes as Norwegian salmon farmers continue to seek greater utilisation of existing licences and sites amid biological challenges, tighter environmental regulation, and limited availability of new production capacity.
