Seafood could play a larger role in protecting the Nordic food system from disruptions to trade and supply chains, according to a report commissioned by the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The study, prepared by Nofima and a consortium of Nordic universities, argues that fish and shellfish are an underutilised strategic resource despite the Nordic region’s position as one of the world’s largest seafood producers.

Researchers noted that seafood value chains remain heavily dependent on international trade, transport and imported feed ingredients, leaving the region exposed to geopolitical and logistical disruptions.

The report recommends stronger cooperation on seafood production, processing and consumption to improve resilience during future supply chain shocks.

“Food from the sea and freshwater constitutes a strategic resource for the Nordic region’s food security,” said Nofima chief executive Bente E. Torstensen.
