Tesco suspends Skye salmon farm following welfare allegations.

Tesco has suspended its use of a salmon farm on Skye after allegations that diseased fish were dumped in a sea loch and live salmon were left to suffocate before processing.

The retailer said the suspension followed footage published by the Green Britain Foundation, which claimed the incidents occurred after a disease outbreak that killed thousands of fish at a site operated by Bakkafrost Scotland near Portree.

Bakkafrost Scotland said the incident was an “isolated occurrence” at the Portree site in autumn 2025 and added that the farm is now fallow. The company said it had “fully and openly” co-operated with the RSPCA during a review, and that the certification body was satisfied with the actions taken.

The Green Britain Foundation welcomed Tesco’s decision to suspend the farm. Director Dale Vince alleged the footage showed an “abuse” of salmon and of regulations intended to protect consumers and the environment.

A Tesco spokesperson said the company takes animal welfare “extremely seriously” and expects suppliers to meet its standards. “As soon as we were made aware of this concerning footage, we immediately suspended the farm to carry out an investigation with our supplier,” the spokesperson said.

The move follows a previous suspension by Tesco last November of another Highland salmon farm owned by Bakkafrost Scotland, after allegations that sea lice infested fish were left in a pen that should have been empty.
