Chile’s National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) has ruled out a suspected fish escape from salmon farming sites in Lake Llanquihue following inspections prompted by a public complaint.

Sernapesca said it launched field and document inspections at all aquaculture sites in the lake after receiving the report on 22 May.

Following the inspections, the regulator said it found no evidence of an escape event.

Under Chilean regulations, salmon farming companies are required to notify Sernapesca and activate contingency plans in the event of an escape. Companies that fail to do so can face fines linked to the value of unrecovered fish and operational suspensions of between one and four years.
