Japanese fisheries and food company Nichimo has launched a land-based trout salmon farm in Kuji, Iwate Prefecture, using what it describes as Japan's first recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) built entirely with domestically manufactured equipment.

The facility, located near Kuji fishing port, forms part of its new "Nichimo-style Module RAS" concept, which combines modular land-based aquaculture technology with consulting services based on its operational experience, according to a press release from the company.

Nichimo said it developed the system using Japanese-made equipment to reduce reliance on imported technology amid geopolitical uncertainty and supply chain disruption.

The consulting business will draw on expertise gained from the company's existing land-based trout salmon farm in Buzen, Fukuoka Prefecture, where it produces its "Mirai Salmon" brand.

RAS technology recirculates and treats water within a closed production system, allowing fish to be raised under controlled conditions while reducing water consumption. The technology has attracted growing investment globally as producers seek to reduce exposure to disease, adverse weather and rising sea temperatures associated with conventional sea-based farming.

Nichimo said it aims to support the expansion of Japan's land-based aquaculture sector and contribute to long-term food security as climate change places increasing pressure on wild fisheries and marine aquaculture.

The company is headquartered in Tokyo.
