Nichirei: cyberattack sends shockwaves through Japan’s food supply chain
A cyberattack on Japanese frozen food and cold storage company Nichirei has disrupted deliveries across Japan, affecting restaurants, supermarkets and food manufacturers that rely on the company's refrigerated logistics network, according to The Asahi Shimbun.
Nichirei shut down its logistics systems on July 13 after detecting the attack, disrupting operations at refrigerated warehouses and delaying frozen food shipments. The company plans to begin restoring operations from July 17.
The disruption could also affect seafood supply chains. Nichirei's logistics subsidiary operates about 140 refrigerated distribution centres across Japan and serves around 5,000 customers, making it the country's largest cold storage network.
Among the businesses affected, conveyor-belt sushi chain Kura Sushi reported shortages of some sushi toppings at dozens of restaurants in the Kansai region, while seafood company Nissui suspended shipments of some frozen food products.
Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan warned of possible ingredient shortages, reduced opening hours and temporary store closures, while supermarket operators including York Benimaru and Aeon reported shortages of some food products.
