Texas: the salmon swap that cost one wholesaler $250,000

Dallas-based Seafood Supply Co. has been fined $250,000 after admitting it falsely labelled Chilean salmon as originating in Scotland and other European countries.
The wholesaler pleaded guilty in March to two counts of violating the US Lacey Act, which prohibits trade in falsely labelled fish, wildlife and plant products.
Court records showed the company misrepresented the origin of salmon between January 2020 and February 2022, allowing it to market lower-priced Chilean fish as higher-value European salmon.
The investigation was conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Law Enforcement under Operation Upstream Diligence, an initiative targeting seafood fraud and illegal trade.
The case was prosecuted by the US Department of Justice’s Environmental Crimes Section with support from the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas
